The JCI Senate year is racing toward completion, and I hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have. Please plan to attend the 2011 Spring Caucus on May 7, which will be hosted by the New Hampshire JCI Senate this year in Concord . We’ll be at the Red Blazer Restaurant at 72 Manchester Street , Concord , exit 13 off Route 93. Please be sure to register for the meeting by April 28. You can contact New Hampshire JCI Senate President Charlie Welch #11719 at 603-339-2969 or by email at charliewelch@usjcisenate.org. I’ll be staying in Concord the night before, and have a room at the Best Western Concord Inn & Suites, which includes breakfast in the AAA/AARP rate. Will I see you at breakfast? There are other hotels near the meeting site, including a Comfort Inn, Brick Tower Motor Inn and Fairfield Inn, and a Red Roof Inn in Loudon. We could have dinner Friday night if you arrive by then.
I am planning a solid agenda with lots to cover. A registration form for the meeting is attached. Bring your friends and your spouse for a great get-together as we review the year. Be there!
Connecticut JCI Senator John McAuliffe #28656 has announced his desire to serve as Region 1 VP next year, so I will be putting Region 1 into great hands.
Thank you, Region 1 presidents, officers and members. I’ve enjoyed visiting you and working with you this year. I truly appreciate all that you have put into this wonderful year and your friendship is special.

These are Region 1 membership statistics for the final quarter of the year, including how each JCI state stands year to date. Please send in your final dues kit to Larry Ferguson #45060, Membership Information Services chair, by May 27 or earlier if possible. Late renewals can be added up to June 1, but much needs to be done before the June national convention, so we are asked to submit early.

The RI JCISenate brought their membership up this quarter through teamwork. Please work as hard as you can to call a new Senator or an old friend to join in this most important quarter. Let’s work together to grow or at least maintain our base.
Foundation Scholarship Recipients From Region 1
Three Region 1 states had top national winners in the US JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship program this year. The students areMallory Coulombe of New Hampshire , Michael Gabrielle of Rhode Island and Carolyn Joseph of Maine . They were among fifteen students nationwide who received scholarships from the US JCI Senate Foundation. This year there were 68 applications to the program from 35 states, and all six Region 1 states participated in the Scholarship program. Well done! Congratulations to each Region 1 JCI Senate state for the effort put in to run the program and provide scholarships on the state level. Best of luck in the future to these deserving New England recipients.

Region One Day at the JFK Library and Museum
This year I hosted a region social to celebrate the end of winter for those of us who did not spend the winter in Florida . It was the idea of Connecticut JCI Senate President Karen Thomson #52424 to have a trip to the JFK Library and Museum in Dorchester , Massachusetts along Boston Harbor . On March 26 Senators and spouses from Rhode Island , Massachusetts and Connecticut met at the JFK Library, where we heard a choral concert by high school students from Austin , Minnesota as we waited for members of our group to arrive. It was great to walk through the Library/Museum and see the Jaycees captain’s chair in the Oval Office replica. The Gardner , MA Jaycees gave the chair to President Kennedy before he was elected president. Gardner is known as “ Chair City ” and the chair has the Jaycee shield on it. We also saw Robert F. Kennedy’s TOYM plaque displayed in the RFK room, and much more. We toured the library for two hours. Then Ron Grandchamp #16201 and Dave Roderick #21608 of the Rhode Island JCI Senate and their wives left us to enjoy a lunch in Boston ’s North End. The rest of us went to a restaurant a mile from the Library/Museum where I had made reservations for us. We had fun that day!
Friendship Award Honoree Patricia Souza
Pat Souza, wife of Massachusetts JCI Senator John Souza #16202, was recognized as Friendship Award Honoree #39 at the US JCI Senate mid-year board meeting in Nashville , Tennessee in January 2011. Pat received the award for her many years of active support for the Jaycees, the Massachusetts JCI Senate and Region 1. Many past Region 1 Friendship Award recipients were there to watch Pat receive her award. Congratulations to Pat. She has been a constant support to Region 1 over the years, and prepared the wonderful al fresco lunch we enjoyed during Fall Frolic 2010 last October at Sholan Farms orchard.
JCI Operation Hope
Past JCI World President Scott Greenlee #60646 of Grand Rapids , Michigan is asking all Senators and Jaycees to please consider giving a contribution to JCI Operation Hope which will be used to assist in relief efforts after the Japan earthquake and tsunami. JCI Operation Hope is a 501 C-3 foundation within the JCI organization, and a contribution will be tax deductible. Donations given in 2005, when the fund was started, assisted tsunami victims, primarily children. In Sri Lanka fishermen who had lost their boats received boats, and children who had lost their school were provided with a new, modernized school, Scott said. Contributions may be sent to JCI World Headquarters at 15645 Olive Blvd. , Chesterfield , MO 63017 . You will receive a letter of acknowledgement for your contribution. I spoke with Scott after we received his appeal, and he had visited the Jaycees in Sendai , ravaged by the recent tsunami, when he was JCI World President.

Get out your old Jaycee shirt or vest, and copy those old photos so we can display them.Martha Fraser FR # 5, as well as Mary Anne Johnston #65901 and Jan Calder FR# 15 will organize the booth, but they could use your help. Registration is under way now for JCI World Congress 2011 in Brussels , Belgium . The dates will be Tuesday, November 1 through November 5. The Senate Bar should be open for hospitality at the Sheraton during certain evening hours of the World Congress days. Check the website www.jciworldcongress.com and register online. World Congress is a great way to make Senate friends from around the world. A pre-tour starting October 28 will also be offered for Senators. We will enjoy the picturesque medieval walled city of Bruges , Belgium , the dikes of the Netherlands , and old battle fields of France . The tour will start in Bruges , an hour by train from Brussels , and will end in Brussels on November 1. More information will be coming on the World Congress website. It will be the JCI trip of a lifetime.

Final Thoughts from Kathy #51469
This has been a really great year for me. Thank you to our great state presidents – Dick Darling #40167 of Maine , who took the helm when Denis Pratt#33076 died suddenly, Jim Bishop #29055 of Massachusetts , who was my district director when I was a new Jaycee. Karen Thomson #52434 of Connecticut , your ideas all year long made the year a better one. Charlie Welch #11719 of New Hampshire , we celebrated your 50 years in the organization at Fall Frolic, and you brought great experience to the top spot. Steve Rowe #40470 of Vermont , your leadership carried a difficult year. Andy Riley #25521, how much I enjoyed my trips to Rhode Island for your excellent meetings. Past Region VP Charlie Dick #39434 often traveled with me, met with me for lunch. His ideas helped me plan for the Fall Frolic business meeting and Spring Caucus. Charlie and other past Region 1 VPs were always there for me– true teamwork.
The Massachusetts JCI Senate hosted a terrific Fall Frolic 2010 in October that was attended by 78 Senators and spouses. The project enjoyed incomparable New England fall weather and brought Senators from other parts of the country and Canada as well as from every Region 1 state. It was a spirited weekend of friendship. I attended each of the planning meetings for the Fall Frolic because Massachusetts is my home state. What a great committee! Thank you to every one of you for your contribution. I look forward to next year’s Fall Frolic, which will be hosted by the great Connecticut JCI Senate.
The year was also a sad one, with many losses that hit home. We lost Maine JCI Senate President Denis Pratt #33076 two weeks into the year. Denis had planned to serve as Region 1 Vice President in the future, and his memorial service brought Senators from all over the region. We lost two JCI Senate treasurers -- Dick Hebert #47131 of Vermont , and Al Jones #68251of Massachusetts . Al had also chaired the Fall Frolic. Al helped me this year by desktop publishing this newsletter. In addition, Connecticut JCI Senate President Karen Thomson #52424 lost her husband Larry, JCI Senator #33371, whom she met through the Jaycee organization. There were many other well loved Senators who passed away this year in all Region 1 states, and we remember them too.
The year isn’t over yet, and I hope you’ll participate in the upcoming state elections and get-togethers listed in the calendar section of the newsletter. I want to see as many of you as possible at the Spring Caucus. I am still enjoying this role, one that was unexpected for me. I had always attended one national meeting a year, but I did not think about becoming Region VP. I decided to serve after no one was elected VP last spring. I have enjoyed myself so much. I knew it was important to have someone represent Region 1 at national meetings, and also to serve as the glue keeping us together, sharing deadlines and information so we could continue on as a regional JCI Senate organization. I’m glad I did, and to all who helped me -- thank you, Region 1!
